Celebrity Historian Raffi Andonian speaks on the 1924 act that granted citizenship to Native Americans

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – This month marks the 100th anniversary of a citizenship act that granted citizenship to Native Americans. Celebrity Historian Raffi Andonian speaks the significance of that act.

The law established birth right citizenship for Native Americans in the United States. Andonian explained one of the most important things in the act is that it allowed Native Americans to keep their tribal membership while also being recognized as U.S. citizens. As a way commemorate the 100th anniversary of the act the U.S. Mint released a special dollar coin that features an eagle staff and American flag on the back to represent the dual citizenship of Native Americans.
