AEW star Ricochet, who recently left WWE, had considered departing from the promotion earlier. Ricochet signed with WWE in 2018 and debuted at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, where he competed in the inaugural NXT North American title match, eventually winning the championship at the show.

Although he had a strong start in WWE NXT, his main roster journey was marked by highs and lows. He transitioned to the main roster in 2019. He soon captured his first singles title by defeating Samoa Joe for the United States Championship at WWE Stomping Grounds. However, he lost the title to AJ Styles after a short reign.

Ricochet also got an opportunity in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Super ShowDown against Brock Lesnar. However, the former was quickly defeated in under two minutes. After the loss to Lesnar in 2020, his career began to decline.

Despite putting on impressive performances, he often came up short. In 2022, Ricochet reclaimed gold by winning the Intercontinental Championship on WWE SmackDown, defeating Sami Zayn with assistance from Johnny Knoxville. However, before securing the Intercontinental title, Ricochet had been considering leaving WWE.

AEW star Ricochet reveals why he stayed in WWE

AEW star Ricochet recently appeared on the “Talk is Jericho” podcast, where he discussed his desire to leave WWE in 2022. He revealed he had approached former WWE Head of Talent Relations, John Laurinaitis. He expressed his intention to quit and pursue opportunities on the independent scene for less money. However, Laurinaitis mentioned plans to involve Ricochet in an Intercontinental Championship match, which led him to reconsider.

He stated, “[In 2022], I had actually went to Laurinaitis and was like, ‘I think I want to quit,’” Ricochet said, claiming he would’ve rather wrestled for less money on the independent scene. He was like, ‘We’re thinking about putting you in an Intercontinental Championship match. How do you feel about that? Is that something you’re still interested in?’ I did win it,” Ricochet said, so he begrudgingly decided to work through the rest of his contract with WWE. “When contract season comes around, if I don’t feel valued … then I know it’s ok to just walk.”

Ricochet captured the Intercontinental Championship, holding it for 98 days before losing it to Gunther, who went on to set a record-breaking 666-day reign with the title. After a respectable run in WWE, Ricochet ultimately decided to leave the promotion in June.
