Episode 9 of the anime starts with Hananoi and Hotaru having a snack and making plans for Hananoi’s upcoming birthday. Later, Hananoi receives a call from his grandmother asking how he will spend his birthday. He tells her he will spend it with Hotaru. She then gives out some strict guidelines he should follow.
Elsewhere, Hotaru ponders what else she could give Hananoi and remembers their conversation about kissing. She goes to her sister for advice, and on her way back, her mom reminds her of her grandfather’s memorial service, which is also on the sixth. She calls Hananoi, who then apologizes and explains the situation.
On his birthday, Hananoi receives a message from Hotaru wishing him a happy birthday. He then decides to see the sakura blossoms alone since Hotaru is busy. Meanwhile, Hotaru finishes the memorial service and rushes to his side. Hananoi sits at the park, watching some parents play with their kids.
The episode then reveals Hananoi’s complicated past with his parents. Hotaru searches endlessly for him and finally finds him by the water bed. She then wishes him a happy birthday once again. Overwhelmed with emotions, he hugs her tightly. The episode ends with Hananoi saying he wants to be Hotaru’s soulmate.
