ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man facing more than a dozen charges after police say he set a barn on fire, killing fourteen dogs, will be released while awaiting trial. Maximilliano Martinez appeared in court Friday morning for a detention hearing.
Police say Martinez was fighting with his significant other, who was staying with a couple in southwest Albuquerque. They say on April 17, the barn behind the house was set on fire with 16 dogs inside, 14 of the dogs were killed. Martinez is facing 16 counts of extreme cruelty to animals.
The state argued the crimes Martinez is accused of are too dangerous for him to be released. Judge Emeterio Rudolfo denied the state’s appeal, ruling Martinez will be released on GPS monitoring until his trial.
