APD set to release details on police shooting that killed suspect, police K-9

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department is holding a news conference at 1 p.m. Monday to release details on a recent officer-involved shooting. The shooting occurred on May 29, 2025 and resulted in the death of the suspect and a police K-9.

Police say the shooting happened at the Comfort Inn Albuquerque Airport. APD Chief Harold Medina said police interactions with 39-year-old Jorge Eduardo Dominguez began the previous day, when officers were called to recover stolen tools from a trailer. Chief Medina says the SWAT team tried to barricade Dominguez, but he escaped. The next day, police were able to track Dominguez to the hotel around 10 p.m. APD said Dominguez tried leaving the hotel, but ran back inside when he saw police. Dominguez then jumped out of a second-story window. A police K-9 was released and was successful in stopping the suspect. Chief Medina said as officers approached, Dominguez produced a gun, and shots were fired. Dominguez was killed on scene, and the police K-9 was shot and killed in the exchange.

The K-9 Rebel, a Belgian Malinois, was described as a loyal, courageous, and valued member of APD for five years. KRQE News 13 learned Rebel was killed with friendly fire. “You know, our canines are here to save and preserve human life. They are here to preserve human life, both of suspects and officers. And this was a difficult situation like mayor said, you know, he did lose his life to friendly fire,” said Chief Harold Medina. That statement by Chief Medina came during a fundraiser announcement honoring Rebel.
