Bernalillo County rescues dog found tied to structure in south valley with no food or water

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A dog rescued from disturbing conditions is recovering this weekend, after someone in the area found him tied up near the mesa in the south valley. “He’ll be evaluated, give him some time and see how he comes around, what his adoptability is going to be like,” said Meagan Rose, an Animal Service Officer with Bernalillo County.

When animal service officers responded to the scene, they saw a dog tied up with some kind of cord to a structure. “He was tied up with like an electric cord to kind of a partial remnant of truck,” Rose said.

According to Bernalillo County’s Animal Care Services, the dog was found in Albuquerque’s south valley, near Pajarito Mesa, after residents in the area sent in reports about the animal. They say the dog was found with no food or water.

Thankfully, a nearby resident fixed that as they waited for the county to respond on scene. “There was some food and water there from the citizens that were also there, but he had not been left with anything by whoever had tied him up there,” Rose explained.

Bernalillo County Animal Services says they believe the dog was abandoned by its owner, but are unsure how long it had been out there. The county says it’ll take some time for him to heal from the event, but all signs are pointing to a successful recovery.

“Health-wise, he’s in relatively good condition,” Rose added. “He’s a good weight, he’s not skinny. His coat is decent. He doesn’t look like he had been out there too horribly long.”

The dog was taken to a shelter, where they are still waiting to see if the owner comes forward. The dog did not have a microchip or a collar. If the owner does not come by, animal services says they will have to complete an evaluation process to see if the dog is adoptable.

“There’s a lot of willingness in this field to try [to] keep these animals at home, or to really get them out of bad situations if it’s just not working out,” Rose said.

The county says that since rescuing the pup, they have named him “Milagro.”
