‘Bike to Work Week’ kicks off in Albuquerque on Monday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — May 12 to May 18 is national “Bike to Work Week.” Here in Albuquerque, Bike ABQ is holding special events throughout the week to celebrate.

One major event includes a gathering on Civic Plaza Friday morning. There will be pop-up safety classes, free safety kits, and more. A city bus will be parked nearby to demonstrate how to use bicycle racks. Transportation Planning Manager Valerie Hermanson says the city has been prioritizing bicycles and safety.

“We’ve added new separated bike lanes on Louisiana and recently and worked to pass the Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan which identifies and prioritizes bikeways to keep Albuquerque beautiful and healthy,” said Hermanson. “I ride my bicycle to work most days, and I know I feel so much better knowing I’m staying healthy and I’m helping reduce car congestion in the city.”
