NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Senate unanimously passed a reform bill aimed at overhauling the state’s child welfare system. Senate Bill 42 strengthens protections for vulnerable children by enhancing transparency within the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department and aligning the state with federal child welfare laws.
Key provisions include stronger oversight for substance-exposed newborns, improved prevention services, and expanded media access to child abuse hearings. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
