Celine Dion, known as the Queen of Power Ballads, is one of the greatest singers ever. Although she has been quite vocal about her struggles, Prime Videos’ upcoming documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, will shed more light on how music changed her life. In addition to covering her musical career and struggles with stiff person syndrome, the documentary will also provide details about her marriage with the late René Angélil.
According to People Magazine, Dion met Angélil, a renowned manager, during an audition in 1980. One year later, he mortgaged his own house to help Dion in releasing her debut album, La Voix du Bon Dieu. The outlet stated that the album became an instant hit in the Quebec region, and Dion became an overnight star. Although they kept working together, in 1987, the duo stepped out for their first official date. However, they decided to keep it a secret due to the 26-year gap between them.
In 1991, René Angélil and Celine Dion got engaged but didn’t publicly reveal their relationship until 1993. Subsequently, they tied the knot in 1994. Five years later, Dion took a break from music after doctors diagnosed Angélil with throat cancer. Luckily, in the following year, doctors declared him cancer-free, and the couple welcomed their first child in 2001. Subsequently, Dion gave birth to twins in October 2010. But their lives hit a bump when the doctors diagnosed him with cancer again. Two years later, in January 2016, René Angélil died at 73.

After Rene Angélil’s second cancer diagnosis, Celine Dion told People Magazine that she promised him that he’d die in her arms. She said, “I have to show myself, my husband, and my kids, that I’m strong and we’re okay. And René says to me, ‘I want to die in your arms.’ Okay, fine, I’ll be there, you’ll die in my arms.’”
