Children at Magnolia Science Academy 7 in Northridge hold a ‘Trashion Show’

Students at Magnolia Science Academy 7 in Northridge gave tribute to Mother Earth by showing off their home-made garments for a “Trashion Show” using so-called trash to create outfits using cardboard, papers and other recyclables.

Gabriela Moreira Rodríguez, Magnolia Science Academy 7 community school coordinator, said the event was in honor of Autism Awareness Month and Earth Day during the school’s Spirit Week. “We have students on the autism spectrum who need support, and we also have parents who are strong on sustainability,” she said in a statement.

Gia De Sanctis and her friend Lucinda Abdelmish, 5th graders at the school, created a unique jacket-dress.

“We made a jacket-dress out of garbage bags and newspapers using tape and scissors,” Gia said. “We wanted to make a dress that’s easy to put on, like a jacket. I like that the school is doing this to help us recycle. …  We don’t have to use only cloth to make dresses.”

Third-grader Liyana Vlashir said, “I made this dress because I enjoyed it, and I thought about what to do with trash.” And parent Hana Vlashir said, “I thought, ‘What are we doing with all this trash?’ I’m a fashion designer, and was very excited about helping my daughter make a dress out of trash. … It’s important to teach our kids what is possible.”

Mayra Guerrero, parent of a second-grade student, said, “The experience was a challenge for the whole family who had to identify items and find a place for them, other than the trash bin. I’d like to see other schools adopt similar programs.”

Principal Musa Avsar at Magnolia Science Academy 7 said, “We’re a STEAM school (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) so students had to use their math skills and art to design their costumes. We are proud of them.”
