Ex-NASCAR driver arrested, accused of confronting police during Jan. 6

WASHINGTON (WGHP) — A former NASCAR Winston Cup driver and his son have been arrested for their alleged conduct during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Tighe Scott, 75, of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, and his son, Jarrett Scott, 48, are among a group of four people who are being charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Tighe Scott got into a confrontation with police on Jan. 6 and “physically struck riot shields, and attempted to rip a riot shield out of an officer’s hands.”

Court documents allege that Tighe Scott and the others — his son, Jarrett; Scott Slater Sr., 56; and Scott Slater Jr., 26, all of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania — entered restricted grounds at the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, and “physically engaged” with police officers. Footage shows all four in attendance at the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 and shows them making their way to the Capitol building.

Slater Jr. allegedly threw a flagpole toward a line of officers, striking one of them. Authorities say he then threw an “area closed” sign at that same line of officers.

The Justice Department says the eldest Scott later struck police riot shields and tried to rip one shield out of an officer’s hands. Slater Sr. and Jarrett Scott, allegedly pushed and resisted police shields while each holding a golf club.

Tighe Scott is being charged with the following:

Felony obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder

Felony assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers

Misdemeanor entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds

Misdemeanor disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds

Misdemeanor engaging in violence in a restricted building or grounds

Misdemeanor violence in Capitol building or grounds

His son, Jarett, has been charged with two felony offenses and five misdemeanors; Slater Sr. faces one felony and three misdemeanors; and Slater Jr. is charged with three felonies and five misdemeanors.

All four were arrested in Pennsylvania.
