FEMA warns New Mexicans of scams after flooding and wildfires

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – FEMA is warning New Mexicans who have been affected by recent flooding and wildfires of scam artists.

The agency released a list of warnings for aid recipients:

FEMA & other agents will never change for assistance

Always ask for photo ID, FEMA shirts are not proof of ID

Don’t give home inspectors your nine digital FEMA number

FEMA inspectors will not require banking or social security numbers

FEMA does not certify or approve private contractors

Contractors should be licensed, ensure, and obtain proper permits

People should be cautious about contracts asking for advanced payments
