Susan Friend LeTourneur is founder of Golden Years Dog Sanctuary, a nonprofit dog and cat rescue on a former 11-acre horse farm in Kagel Canyon in Sylmar, who, along with her husband Paul, has rescued more than 390 dogs and 300 cats.
“When I closed escrow on my 11-acre horse farm back in 1999, the first thing I did was go to the shelter,” she said. “I adopted the dog that had been there the longest. Over the years, many dogs were literally dumped at our gate or thrown over the fence. … When I turned 50, back in 2017, I decided I wanted to make a difference in the world.”

Before creating Golden Years Dog Sanctuary, they saved nearly 50 dogs that were abandoned at their front gate, or were “left under the dumpsters like trash.”
“We always took them in and found them a home,” she said. In 2020, they started a foster program to help more dogs get out of the shelters and into homes. “We rescue the old, sick dogs that no one wants and give them the best of the rest of their lives.”
The Golden Years Dog Sanctuary is holding a fundraiser and adoption event on Dec. 13, 10am to 1pm.
