According to a federal indictment, in August 2024 staff at the correctional center found a package near the rec yard. The package contained heroin, tobacco, THC wax, suboxone, drug paraphernalia and cell phones. Through their investigation, officials learned the package was intended for Vallez and Lupe Vargas. According to the indictment, federal investigators say Vargas and Vallez are believed to be gang members. They say the pair got Vargas’ wife and another person to use a fishing rod to throw the package into the prison.

Wednesday, Vallez pleaded guilty for his role in the crime. Vallez faces up to 40 years when sentenced.
