Valedictorian and respected competitive swimmer Max Liberzon gave an inspiring graduation speech at Ulysses S. Grant High School ceremonies on Monday, June 10 in Valley Glen, where 375 seniors celebrated their final hours as high-schoolers at the “Home of the Lancers.”
Principal Rebecca McMurrin has in the past described Grant High School, founded in 1959, as a place that celebrates a diverse and inclusive environment through the school’s academic and extracurricular activities, and she has written that “Lancers are great!” And that shared belief was clear at graduation as thrilled seniors were photographed in their robes by Grant High employee Mercedes Ramirez and accepted their diplomas while proud parents, friends and siblings looked on.
From Edward Gramajo who wore futuristic sunglasses that captured the attention of the Los Angeles Daily News photographer, to Nancy Santos who waved to her family as she received her diploma, to Acohnna Sutton who was all smiles, the scores of laughing graduates no doubt agreed with Principal McMurrin that Lancers are great. Many plan to go on to college or other adventures, perhaps inspired by Los Angeles Valley College located next door to Grant High.
Dozens of creative mortarboards worn by the graduates had messages for the crowd, ranging from political statements to pure happiness. One that stood out seemed to get to the heart of this 2024 graduating class.
The mortarboard had been signed by dozens of friends, family and teachers. And the mortarboard read, “All Thanks to Them.”
