Hidroelectrica has signed the contract for the modernization project of the high-power pumping stations Petrimanu, Jidoaia and Lotru. The contract, with an estimated value of 98 million euros excluding VAT, was awarded to ELECTROMONTAJ S.A., with subcontractors ELIN MOTOREN GmbH, VOITH HYDRO GmbH & Co. KG and BUTAN GRUP S.R.L.

The modernization of the three high-power pumping stations – Petrimanu, Jidoaia and Lotru – located downstream of the Dorin Pavel Hydropower Plant, represents one of the most significant infrastructure investments Hidroelectrica has undertaken in recent years. The project is expected to contribute to increased energy efficiency, operational flexibility and enhanced balancing capabilities for Romania’s National Energy System.

The upgrade will extend the operational lifespan of the pumping facilities by at least 30 years, improve the performance of electromechanical equipment and control systems, and integrate state-of-the-art automation and digital control technologies compatible with the SCADA/EMS standards used within the company. It will also strengthen the fast-response capacity of the grid in situations of energy imbalance and support the better integration of renewable energy production.

“The completion of the awarding procedure for the modernization of the high-power pumping stations on the Lotru river and the signing of the contract represent a milestone for our investment strategy. This project carries both technological and strategic importance. From a technical perspective, the work will bring the installations to the highest European standards of performance and safety, through equipment provided by partners with strong international expertise such as VOITH and ELIN MOTOREN. Strategically, it reinforces Hidroelectrica’s role in ensuring the stability and resilience of the National Energy System, at a time when balancing renewable generation is becoming essential for Romania’s energy security,” said Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.

Hidroelectrica is the largest renewable energy producer in Romania and one of the key energy players in South-Eastern Europe. With an installed capacity of over 6.3 GW across its hydropower portfolio, complemented by the Crucea wind farm, the company plays a crucial role in strengthening national energy security and supporting the European Union’s decarbonization targets.
