The European Union’s Innovation Fund has selected Holcim Romania’s CCS project – Carbon Hub CPT01 – for financing, marking a major milestone in decarbonizing the construction sector in Eastern Europe. The project will capture CO₂ from cement and lime production at the Câmpulung facilities and permanently store it underground, significantly reducing emissions.
As part of an extensive industrial consortium, the initiative becomes the first fully integrated onshore CCS project in the region to simultaneously capture CO₂ emissions from both cement and lime production — positioning Romania at the forefront of climate innovation.

This funding represents a strong vote of confidence in state-of-the-art technologies and makes our carbon capture project more viable and scalable. At the same time, it is essential that we continue to receive support from Romanian and European authorities to turn this project into reality.”
The initiative covers the entire carbon capture value chain — from capturing CO₂ generated in cement and lime production, to safe geological storage within Romania. It builds on proven technologies and Holcim Group’s global expertise, aligning with the company’s ambition to deliver net-zero cement by 2032. With this approval, the consortium will move forward to the design and permitting phases, aiming to begin construction before the end of the decade and achieve first CO₂ capture and storage in 2032.
