ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As part of protests happening nationwide, thousands of people across New Mexico also showed up in opposition of the Trump Administration. The “No Kings Day” protest drew in a large crowd in Albuquerque, including both residents and public figures.
“We are strong, we are brave, we are courageous, and we have no kings in America,” said Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (D-New Mexico).
Representative Melanie Stansbury led Saturday’s “No Kings Day” protest, telling New Mexicans this is about protecting democracy from the Trump Administration. The congresswoman spoke in support of immigrant families while condemning the White House’s recent immigration policies.
The “No Kings Day” protests are in direct opposition to the military parade in Washington, D.C. Saturday honoring the army’s 250th anniversary. Some of the protesters in attendance said they’re proud to see how Albuquerque has shown up today.
“I feel it’s important that we represent what we believe in, and for us, this is resistance. Peaceful resistance. The way the administration is going, it has to change, and only the people can change it,” said protester Victoria Plata.
“I’m really just proud of all of these people that show up, you know? Take time out of their day to be here. Young people, old people, it’s awesome,” said protester Mark Boldman.
Meanwhile, others told us it’s about sending a message to the world that not everyone supports the Trump Administration. “There’s no compassion from this administration, it’s just bullying and hatred, and we’re not that kind of country, we’re not those people. And we need to show the world that we don’t support this,” said protester Mabel Santiago.
Albuquerque Police also told KRQE they monitored the protest from the Real Time Crime Center and said everything remained peaceful.
