Friday’s Five Facts
[1] City of Albuquerque cuts ties with local non-profit after misuse of city funds – The city of Albuquerque is cutting ties with a local housing nonprofit after saying that it was misappropriating city funds. A little more than $200,000 of city funds were earmarked to help people pay their rent under the housing voucher program. The city was working with Supportive Housing Coalition of New Mexico. The city says the nonprofit’s actions led to delayed rent payments for more than 100 clients. The group will be responsible for paying back the funds they misappropriated.
[2] Albuquerque police arrest 2nd suspect for murder of 13 year old – Police arrested 21-year-old Thomas Acee on Thursday night for the murder of Michael Tubb. In August police were called to downtown Albuquerque where they found Tubb dead in the car and his friend shot in the leg. Detectives arrested Michael Flores for the murder in October after tracking down the car he was driving during the shooting. Police said Acee was with Flores on the night of the shooting.
[3] Moisture south with cooler temperatures – Scattered showers and light mountain snow will move into southern New Mexico this morning. These showers will then fizzle out through the afternoon and evening. Drier and warmer weather moves back into New Mexico this weekend. Warmer weather moves in through Sunday, this is ahead of our next storm system that will move in on Monday.
[4] City of Albuquerque presents donations to Toys for Tots – Thursday, the City of Albuquerque’s Parks and Recreation Department made its second annual donation to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program. The department collected 920 toys, 23 bikes, and $1,700 to give to the Toys for Tots program. The final in-person sign-up event of the season is happening on Saturday at the Ted M. Gallegos Community Center.
[5] Pay What You Please: Christmas trees for a cause in Corrales – The Pay What You Please event is returning for a fifth year on Saturday. Freshly cut pines will be sold and the customer gets to name the price. It will be held at Sandia Bar in Corrales and guests can enjoy caroling, ornament painting, and a visit from Santa. Proceeds will g to Presbyterian Ear Institute and Parkinson’s Connections.
