Man linked to 2023 deadly hit-and-run with DNA, Albuquerque Police Department says

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – More than a year after a deadly hit-and-run in northeast Albuquerque, police said they have the man who fled the scene.

Last August, police responded to a crash on Edith and Odelia near albuquerque high.

Albuquerque police (APD) claimed an SUV rear-ended a motorcycle, which was reported stolen, dragging it and the rider for half a mile onto Broadway.

The rider later died at the hospital.

APD said the SUV was registered to Willie Ortiz, but he declined to give a statement to police when interviewed in September last year. Police stated, in May, DNA linked Ortiz to the crash.

Ortiz was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on Wednesday and is facing homicide by vehicle DWI, among other charges. The state is asking to keep him in custody through trial.
