Man with ties to New Mexico arrested for agreeing to photograph fort, mail radio to Russia, DOJ says

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRQE) – A member of the Kansas Army National Guard who has ties to New Mexico was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly agreed to photograph a U.S. Army installation in Kansas and mail a helicopter radio to the Russian military, according to the Department of Justice.

Canyon Anthony Amarys, 28, of Alamogordo, New Mexico, was indicted in federal court on an attempted violation of the Export Control Reform Act.

The DOJ accused Amarys of meeting with someone he believed to be a Russian intelligence agent in February 2025 and signing an agreement to verify his relationship with a Russian intelligence service. As part of that relationship, the DOJ said Amarys agreed to photograph a military installation on Fort Riley in Kansas and obtain a helicopter radio for the Russian military.

In March 2025, after he allegedly bought the helicopter radio, Amarys traveled to Kansas to get the radio and send it to Romania, understanding that the radio would be illegally diverted to Russia, according to the DOJ.

The New Mexico National Guard said that Amarys has never been affiliated with the organization.

The FBI Kansas City field office is investigating the case, with help from the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command, the Kansas National Guard, and the Department of Commerce – Bureau of Industry and Security, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
