Moisture returns for parts of the state next week

Windy conditions have been moving through the state today. Even though we saw relatively calm surface winds at Balloon Fiesta Park this morning, winds just above the surface were too strong for balloons to actually take off. A static display was still possible with mild temperatures, though. Throughout the day, winds have really picked up, with some areas seeing 50+ mph wind gusts. Heading toward sunset, these winds will calm down significantly.

Much lighter winds look to be in place Sunday morning, bringing a near picture-perfect setup for Day 2 of Balloon Fiesta with a light northeasterly drainage wind. A box effect may even set up on Sunday morning. Winds will be lighter in the afternoon and evening, too.

Another box effect is likely on Monday morning. A backdoor cold front will start moving into New Mexico from the northeast, bringing rain chances back to the northern and eastern parts of the state. Rain chances increase across most of New Mexico on Tuesday and Wednesday as the cold front moves across the state, again bringing cooler temperatures. Mornings still look quiet, though, for Mass Ascension.
