New art-based light installations coming to downtown Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A project that aims to bring light-based artwork to areas in and around downtown Albuquerque is returning this year. “City Brights II” will showcase light-based art at 10 sites in the downtown area, including around Lomas Boulevard, Broadway Boulevard, 12th Street, and Coal Avenue.

The city is currently looking for artists to participate in the project and will provide them funding in the amounts of up to $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000. “We decided to do a range of budgets to help artists who are maybe emerging and want to try something out. And all the way to artists that are really proficient in doing lighting type of projects,” said Sherri Brueggemann, City of Albuquerque Public Art Urban Enhancement division manager.

The Albuquerque Department of Arts & Culture is planning to invest $100,000 in the art installations. The pieces are expected to be installed during fall 2024–early 2025.

The “City Brights II” project is a second rendition of the “City Bright” project that the city did in 2019. “The first round resulted in five really great lighting installations that included sort of like a light game in the window at one of our local theaters, an installation that looked like falling rain, but the kind of rain that dries up before it hits the ground,” said Brueggemann. “And we had some fun neon installations.”

The city is hosting a free workshop for artists interested in participating. The workshop will be held in person on Thursday, June 13, at Gallery One, 1 Civic Plaza NW, Suite 1400, in Albuquerque.

The deadline for artists to submit their proposals is July 1, and artists will be notified if their work is selected on Aug. 1. To learn more, click here.
