New Mexico Public Education Department seek public review of Martinez/Yazzie Action Plan

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Public Education Department is releasing its plan to make sure all students are college ready, after a court ruled the state has not been meeting its obligation to give at-risk students a good education.

In 2018, the Martinez/Yazzie lawsuit argued that at-risk students, including Native Americans, English language learners, low income students and students with disabilities were not receiving a quality education. The court agreed, ruling the public education department had to create a plan to correct shortcomings. Last year, the plaintiffs filed another motion, saying the state had failed to take action to comply with the ruling and a judge agreed.

Now, the public education department has completed the first draft of that plan. Areas of focus include prioritizing high quality instruction, access to culturally responsible educators and increased academic, social and behavioral support services. The public is being invited to review the plan. To view the plan and provide feedback, click here.
