Just off the back of celebrating its fortieth birthday, one of Adelaide’s most crucial arts institutions, Nexus Arts, has announced a three-show series of contemporary music from six of South Australia’s most dynamic and promising new artists.
Nexus Arts has long held a prestigious reputation for supporting and promoting the work of underrepresented and culturally diverse artists, and this upcoming Interplay program continues on in that worthy tradition.
The Interplay performance series is the exciting culmination of a year-long program in 2024 that saw six musicians from First Nations and culturally diverse backgrounds take part in one-on-one career guidance, mentorship, and intensive group activities.
The six talented musicians involved in this program include Steph Teph, Elizabeth Ruyi, Ms Chipeta, Kara Manasala, Vincy Chan, and LENI.
The series will kick off on Saturday, November 16th, with a performance from Australian Chinese-Malaysian artist Steph Teh. Teh is a multi-instrumentalist and collaborator who creates with cello, guitar, piano, and voice, and is working on creating an EP. She will be joined by her mentor and Interplay alumni, Elizabeth Ruyi, an Australian-Malaysian-Chinese artist who captivates audiences with her heartfelt storytelling.
The next Interplay performance will occur on Saturday, November 23rd, and will feature Ms. Chipeta and Kara Manansala.
Adelaide-based Malawian-Australian singer-songwriter Ms Chipeta draws on a unique blend of R&B, soft pop, and alternative indie. Kara Manansala, also based in Adelaide, is a Filipino-Italian musicmaker and storyteller. Her jazz education has allowed her to draw on elements of jazz, nu-jazz, neo-soul and RnB to create her own unique sound.
The final portion of the Interplay program will take place on Saturday, November 30th, and will feature Vincy Chan, a multi-instrumentalist trained in piano, voice, cello and traditional Ghanaian drumming. Vincy will be joined by Interplay alumni, Indigenous Mapuché Chilean / Australian singer and producer LENI.
This program is one poised to move and change audiences. These performances, peppered throughout November, will be ones to set aside time for. Tickets to each portion of the program are available now.
