Philip Morris Romania installs 3.4 MWh solar panels at Otopeni factory

Philip Morris Romania has completed the installation of 6,188 solar panels, with a total installed capacity of 3.4 MWh, at its factory in Otopeni. The panels, installed in the parking area and on the rooftops of production buildings with support from ENGIE Romania, were commissioned on November 1.

Since 2017, Philip Morris International (PMI) has invested over USD 730 million in the modernization and technological transformation of the Otopeni facility. Part of these investments have been dedicated to sustainability measures, including the integration of solar power systems.

“This initiative is another concrete step in the sustainable transformation of our factory. We are committed to taking an active role in combating climate change and are proud to produce green energy. The solar panels reduce our carbon footprint by generating energy to support the operation of the largest industrial electric boiler in Romania, used to produce the technological steam required for our production processes. Additionally, the panels provide shade for parked vehicles, which reduces fuel and energy consumption during hot summer days. The result is a further decrease in greenhouse gas emissions,” said Kurnia Adhi Sulistyawan, Director Manufacturing at Philip Morris Romania.

The solar panel installation project began in 2023 and was carried out in two phases. The first phase included the construction of one of the largest parking areas with bifacial solar panels in Romania, with an installed capacity of 0.5 MWh, as well as the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The second phase involved the installation of solar panels on the factory rooftops, covering an area of over 15,000 sqm and adding an installed capacity of 2.9 MWh. In total, the project reaches a combined installed capacity of 3.4 MWh.
