Romanian arrested for spying on NATO military targets in Romania
The police officers of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and from the subordinate structures, together with the prosecutors of the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism – Central Structure, documented the criminal activity of a suspected person (a Romanian citizen), investigated for committing the crime of treason.
According to DIICOT prosecutors, starting from the year 2022, the investigated person would have supervised some Romanian or NATO military objectives, located in the vicinity of the city of Tulcea, collecting information of a military nature and taking photographs of military combat equipment and the movement of personnel in the border area with Ukraine, which – would be sent to diplomats from a foreign embassy in Romania, with mass media reporting it would have been Russia’s Embassy in Bucharest.
The man allegedly filmed and photographed military convoys passing through Romania and transmitted them to the Kremlin through the Russian embassy.
As a result of the home searches, several means of evidence were seized. On the same date, prosecutors D.I.I.C.O.T. ordered the detention of the investigated person, later being referred to the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which ordered his preventive arrest for 30 days. Specialist support was provided by the Special Operations Directorate of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police and the Technical and Forensic Service of the D.I.I.C.O.T.

The judicial activities were carried out together with the judicial police officers of the D.I.I.C.O.T. – Central Structure The action benefited from the support of the Romanian Intelligence Service, the General Defense Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of National Defense and the gendarmes of the Special Intervention Brigade of the “Vlad Țepeș” Gendarmerie.

Who is the Romanian arrested for espionage?

MAE expels Russian diplomat
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces, on Friday, that it has declared persona non grata a diplomat from the Russian Embassy in Bucharest. In a statement, the MFA transmits that the diplomat carried out “activities that contravene the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs that the Romanian authorities have decided to declare persona non grata on the territory of Romania of a diplomat from the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest, for activities that contravene the the provisions of the Vienna Convention of 1961 on diplomatic relations.
These elements were communicated to the Russian side today, May 24, 2024, during the convocation at the MAE headquarters, at the disposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminița Odobescu, of the person in charge of affairs a.i. of the Russian Federation in Bucharest”, the Romanian Foreign Ministry informed.
Russia threatens with “adequate response”
The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted on Friday after Romania expelled a diplomat from the Russian Embassy in Bucharest and claims that “it will give an adequate response”, reports the Russian news agency TASS.
Previously, the charge d’affaires of Russia in Romania was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, where he was informed of the decision to declare the Russian diplomat persona non grata. The name of the expelled diplomat has not been revealed.
Romania also expelled a Russian diplomat in August 2022. Just like then, the name of the expelled diplomat is not published now either.
