Ruidoso officials warn of areas vulnerable to flooding

RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – With monsoon season just around the corner, officials from the Village of Ruidoso say that there are three main areas of their community that are still vulnerable to floods. It’s still due to burn scars from the South Fork and Salt fires.

“The major areas that we want to concentrate on are Highway 70. If water falls over the Salt burn scar, that’s right as you enter in and that’s one of the main access points,” said Deputy Village Manager Michael Martinez.

The two other areas of concern are Upper Canyon, from the South Fork burn scar, as well as Brady Canyon and Mechem. The Midtown Shopping Area, the race track, and hiking trails remain open.

“There will be flooding, but it will be temporary,” said Mayor Lynn D. Crawford. “Roads will be cleaned up and business will be back to usual.”

Officials in Ruidoso are coordinating with the National Weather Service to make sure that residents and visitors are safe during rainstorms. They are also urging residents to sign up for the Village of Ruidoso Alert System.
