Ryan Reynolds has revealed in a recent interview that he is working on a script for a new non-Marvel movie to reunite with Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy. Their previous collaboration, the third entry in Reynolds’ Deadpool movies, debuted in US theaters on July 26, 2024, and went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, reportedly earning around $1.338 billion at the global box office against a $200 million production budget.

Recently, in a Variety Awards Circuit Podcast episode, Reynolds disclosed that he would spend the year writing a script for a movie that could reunite him with Jackman and Levy. This new film will not be a Marvel project. “I’m spending the year writing,” Reynolds stated. “I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.”

It’s unclear what type of movie this will be, as Reynolds reportedly didn’t reveal much about the plot. Notably, besides Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy has worked with Reynolds on 2021’s Free Guy and 2022’s The Adam Project.

The first one came out in theaters and made $331.5 million at the box office globally against a $100–125 million production budget. The second one became available on Netflix following a limited one-night-only theatrical release. Per Samba TV, three million households in the US watched The Adam Project in its opening weekend.

Levy has also worked with Jackson before Deadpool & Wolverine. Their previous joint venture was the 2011 sci-fi sports feature Real Steel. Made on a $110 million production budget, the movie earned $300 million worldwide.

It’s also unknown for which studio Reynolds intends to make this film. His recent projects had a wide range of distributors. Disney was the distributor for Deadpool & Wolverine, 2024’s IF was a Paramount project, and 2022’s Spirited debuted on Apple TV+.

Besides this untitled movie, Reynolds has several projects in the pipeline, including Peter Atencio’s Animal Friends, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s Mayday, and a cinematic adaptation of the video game series Dragon’s Lair.

Jackman will next appear in Kyle Balda’s Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie. He is also reportedly set to play the titular character in Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood.
