SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two brothers who were faculty members at the Santa Fe Indian School died in a crash with a 19-year-old Thursday morning.
Boys’ head basketball coach, Jason Abeyta, and assistant Athletic Director, Nathan Abeyta were involved in the crash around 5:53 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 84 and State Road 554, east of Abiquiu.
New Mexico State Police said Jason Abeyta, 47, and Nathan Abeyta, 42, were riding in a Jeep Wrangler when a Chevy Camaro driven by Isaac Madrid, 19, was traveling Southbound on NM84 and hit the Jeep head-on.
NMSP said the Chevy was maneuvering a curve and crossed over into the northbound lanes of travel for “reasons unknown.” Madrid and the Abeyta brothers were pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
The school said it will be providing counseling for students and staff after spring break later this month.
