Sergio Rivas and NM United mutually part ways

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Sergio Rivas is finished wearing the black of Yellow of New Mexico United, at least for now. Rivas said he and the 2024 USL Western division champions mutually agreed to part ways. He said it was nothing bad. Rivas said he and his wife just wanted a change.

The 27-year-old midfielder did not rule out possibly returning at another time. Rivas said he will miss the fans and playing for his hometown. Rivas, who started playing professional soccer in 2019, had his first season with New Mexico United in 2021. He was hobbled by injuries for nearly half of the 2024 season, where he scored 3 goals and had 3 assists. His best year was in 2023 where Rivas scored 7 goals along with 5 assists.

Rivas is not sure where he will play next. He said it will depend on the city and its facilities. New Mexico United currently has five players signed for next season. The club is also still seeking a new coach after Eric Quill departed for a job with Dallas FC of the MLS.
