South Torrance baseball loses to Birmingham in CIF regional playoffs

The South Torrance baseball team had its season come to an end Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to Birmingham in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division III playoffs.

The Spartans (18-15), the fifth seed, were playing their first game since losing to St. John Bosco on May 14 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinals.

It was the 19th time this season South had a game decided by two runs or less. The Spartans were 8-11 in those games.

South managed just two hits against Birmingham starter Eden Nalin.

Birmingham, the No. 4 seed, scored its two runs in the first inning against South starter Mason Tymick. Trevor Sostman’s triple drove in two runs and gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead.

Tymick pitched five innings and allowed two hits, two runs, one earned, walked three and struck out two.

Birmingham lost to Bell, 4-1, Saturday in the L.A. City Section Open Division final.

South was the only South Bay school participating in the baseball and softball regional playoffs.

Birmingham will face St. John Bosco in Thursday’s regional semifinal.

St. John Bosco, the top seed, defeated eighth-seeded Granada Hills Charter 3-2 in their meeting Tuesday.

The regional final will be played Saturday.
