Mild temperatures continue across the state this afternoon. The next chance for rain will be coming to southern New Mexico tonight.
A weak cold front is making is way across New Mexico today. This front will only be dropping temperatures by a few degrees in eastern and northern New Mexico. The reason for the weak front is the Rex Block to the west of New Mexico. The upper air flow associated with the high and low pressures are making it difficult for weather pattern to move through the upper atmosphere.
The low pressure system in the Rex Block will move south today and settle over southern Arizona. This low will then draw moisture into southern New Mexico. Resulting in spotty afternoon showers in southern and southeastern New Mexico Thursday and Friday. A light drizzle may linger in southeast New Mexico through Saturday.
Next week another low pressure will be making its way to New Mexico. However, there is uncertainty surrounding the exact track of the low pressure. The Euro is showing the low pressure clipping northern New Mexico an bringing little snow or rain. The GFS is showing the low moving through central New Mexico and bringing measurable snowfall from the Northern Mountains to Ruidoso. It is likely the track will be somewhere in the middle and that the GFS is overshooting the snowfall amounts. Regardless of the snowfall totals, this low pressure will be sending a strong cold front through New Mexico on Monday. This front will result in 10-15 degree temperature drops across the state on Tuesday.
