Star Wars: The Acolyte Episode 3 introduces the concept “The Force is a thread” and viewers want to know what it means. Episode 3, titled Destiny, predominantly takes place on Osha and Mae’s (Amandla Stenberg) homeworld, Brendok, 16 years before the current events. During this period, they are part of a coven of witches who can use what the Jedi call the Force.

While training the twins before their “Ascension,” Mother Aniseya, the leader of the coven, explains what the witches believe the thread is, and its relation to the Jedi concept of the Force.

What does “The Force is a thread” mean in Star Wars: The Acolyte?

The Force is known by many names across the galaxy, with the thread being the term the witches on Brendok use to describe it. In general terms, The Force originated from all lives and is the singular factor that binds everything in the universe. According to Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Force is something that “surrounds and penetrates us.” Mother Aniseya describes the thread similarly, though there are distinctions. She says “all living things” are connected by the same thread, noticeably leaving out the non-living things.

Mother Aniseya also dismisses the Jedi and the Sith’s idea of using the Force. The coven believes that the thread is not a power that one can wield. It is the very thing that connects an individual to their destiny and the people around them. When the thread is pulled, it impacts everything.

While it may appear so, Aniseya is not arguing for the sanctity of destiny. She is simply disagreeing with how the Jedi view the Force and use it. Later in the episode, Osha meets the Jedi and becomes interested in joining their order. Despite her disappointment, Aniseya accepts Osha’s choice, letting the girl pull the thread and change the course of her life.
