Survey: 7 in 10 Romanians would vote online with digital identity

Metaminds, a developer of technology solutions for digital services, in collaboration with the public opinion polling company, AtlasIntel, conducted a survey on the digitalization of public services in Romania. The nationwide survey reveals that 7 out of 10 Romanians would vote online if they had access to digital identity.

The survey also shows that although 7 out of 10 Romanians have never signed an official document using an electronic signature, 63% want the government to implement digital identity, believing it could significantly reduce bureaucracy in public services in Romania.

Andrei Roman, founder of AtlasIntel, explained that “the digitalization of public services is a vital element in our society’s evolution towards a more efficient and transparent administration. This study, conducted by AtlasIntel on behalf of Metaminds, is an important step in understanding the needs and concerns of our citizens regarding this process of digital transformation. The study reveals that an overwhelming majority of more than 90% of Romanians consider the digitalization of public services imperative for economic development, given that bureaucracy remains a very serious impediment. At the same time, the study demonstrates that the advancements in recent years, both in terms of state modernization and the digital skills of its citizens, are insufficient. More than half of Romanians, approximately 52%, declare that their interaction with the currently available digital public services has not improved their personal experience with these services. We are still at the beginning of this journey”.

Bureaucracy (69.7%), unresolved citizen issues (37%), and lack of interconnectivity (36%) are the main reasons Romanians cite for the inefficiency of public services. The survey also reveals that the healthcare system is the public service most Romanians want to see digitized (67%), through online appointments, telemedicine, and electronic medical records, followed by tax services (54.1%) and social security services (30.8%) through online portals for pension and social assistance applications.

Andrei Cruceru, co-founder and CEO of Metaminds, stated, “We are at the start of a new phase of long-term development. To talk about the future, we need to understand the present well. That’s why we conducted this survey, to see where we are and better predict future needs. With this mirror showing us citizens’ perceptions of Romania’s digitalization, we can focus our efforts on areas where they feel the need for digital change. We see that one major problem is the lack of service interconnectivity, which generates frustration, distrust, and inefficiency. Therefore, and considering that the future of digitalization in Romania will follow global trends, we will invest in developing new capabilities, skills, and technologies to meet the current and future challenges of interconnecting digital services”.

The survey was conducted from June 1-4, through random digital recruitment, on a sample of 1,464 people.

Metaminds will allocate approximately 3 million euros over the next few years to create and expand departments dedicated to the architecture, development, and operationalization of new technology solutions, and to strengthen expertise through training programs for specialized teams in computing, storage, virtualization, communications architecture, and security.
