The ceremony for the MTV Video Music Awards was held last night (September 11) and took place at the UBS Arena in New York, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion.

Throughout the event, awards were taken home by the likes of Chappell Roan who won Best New Artist, Sabrina Carpenter who won Song Of The Year for ‘Espresso’, and Katy Perry for VMA Most Iconic Performance – check out the full winners list here.

However, it was Swift who was the unrivalled winner on the night, snagging an impressive seven awards and breaking a VMAs record along the way.

Her haul included Song of the Summer, Best Collaboration, Best Direction and Best Editing – all of which were for ‘Fortnight’,  her ‘The Tortured Poets Department collaboration with Post Malone. She also took home huge awards including Artist of the Year and Best Pop.

That being said, it was her win for Video Of The Year which was one of the most impressive victories on the night. Taking home the trophy once again for ‘Fortnight’, the win secured Swift as the only artist to have won the award three years in a row.

It also saw her extend her own record of the most overall Video of the Year trophies to five. Previous wins were in 2023 for ‘Anti-Hero’, in 2022 for All Too Well: The Short Film, in 2019 for ‘You Need to Calm Down’, and in 2015 with ‘Bad Blood’.

“To the fans, I’m always trying to figure out a way to say thank you to you for making my life what it is, for making the ‘Eras’ tour what it has become, for making the ‘Tortured Poets Department’ what it has become,” she said while accepting the award (via Rolling Stone). “That’s all you guys for doing that and for voting for this award. So thank you to MTV for giving me this opportunity to thank the fans, to thank you for what you’ve done.”

Having won in seven of the 12 categories that she was nominated for, Swift is now tied with Beyoncé as having the most wins at the MTV VMAs.

Beyoncé and Swift now have 30 awards to their names – that being said, five of Bey’s come from her work with Destiny’s Child and alongside Jay-Z as The Carters. This means that Swift has the most VMAs to her name as a solo artist.

Trophies that Swift was nominated for this year but missed out on included Most Iconic Performance prize for her 2009 rendition of ‘You Belong With Me’ on the New York City subway. This was the same year that she was infamously interrupted by Kanye West while accepting an award at the VMAs. The award was given to Katy Perry for ‘ROAR’.

‘Fortnight’ also lost out to Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ when it came to the Song Of The Year category, to Ariana Grande’s ‘We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)’ for Best Cinematography, to Eminem’s ‘Houdini’ for Best Visual Effects and to Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘BOA’ for Best Art Direction.

In other Taylor Swift news, the singer recently announced her endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris‘ presidential candidacy and helped catapult The Darkness’ track ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ to Number One after a clip of her singing it with boyfriend Travis Kelce went viral.
