The criminal history of the man who threw a dog at an Albuquerque police officer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The video, which shocked many KRQE News 13 viewers, showed a suspect throwing a dog at an Albuquerque police officer before running through traffic. Now, Thursday night, there’s good news about the dog while court records reveal a troubling history for the suspect who’s even been wrapped up in a murder case.

It’s not what Albuquerque Police Department Officer Aaron Stevens ever expected when Bobby Chavez tried to escape by throwing a dog at him. Turns out, Chavez doesn’t own the small Yorkie he threw at the officers, outside of the DK gas station at Candelaria Rd. and Carlisle Blvd.

This wasn’t the first time Chavez had been on the run from police either. In 2016, police found him and three others at a home near Carlisle Blvd. and Candelaria Rd. At that time, the group was wanted for a handful of property crimes. at the property. Officers also found what appeared to be a pipe bomb.

Chavez pled guilty in that case, and a judge gave him a suspended three-year prison sentence. But after multiple probation violations, he was eventually put behind bars. In 2016, police learned Chavez was wanted in a murder case. He ended up pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit murder. A judge gave him nine years in prison, but suspended that sentence when Chavez agreed to testify against his co-defendants. Instead, Chavez got probation, something he later violated by stealing a car. A judge ordered him to serve eight years in 2018, but Chavez got out of jail in 2023.

Today, Chavez is now facing two cases in Bernalillo County, one for aggravated assault and another drug case. He was due in court Thursday morning for a review of his conditions of release, but Chavez refused to be transported from the jail to the courthouse.
