The Jezabels Distance Themselves From Singer’s Right Wing Comments

The Jezabels have shared a statement effectively distancing themselves from lead singer Hayley Mary.

The post was shared yesterday (13 November) in the wake of Mary’s recent expressions of concern about the federal government quietly bringing in a misinformation bill. However valid Mary’s concerns were, she caused controversy by bringing up her points while wearing a MAGA cap, which immediately opened assumptions about supporting Donald Trump.

Mary shared her post last week (7 November), in which she discussed the “super woke music industry” and said she’d been living in “self-censorship” for too long.

“So yeah, cancel me and cancel my shows if you like,” she wrote after sharing concerns about the federal government’s Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill (and linking to the Human Rights Commission). “I don’t care enough to keep up the facade. What good is rock ‘n roll if it has to be filtered through the ministries of truth and propaganda anyways?”

She continued, “I speak for myself alone here; no one I’ve ever worked or played with. But yeah, while I’m at, and for no real reason other than to use my freedom to offend while it still exists, fuck it … #MAGA.”

On Sunday (10 November), Mary shared a follow-up post about the criticisms and questions she received about her initial post.

Following both posts, The Jezabels distanced themselves from Mary’s stance, writing: “We abhor the language of the far-right and see through their grotesque attempts to moralise on free speech.”

Hayley Mary released her debut solo album, Roman XS, in late October. She began a national tour with her backing band, The Hurricanes, on 25 October. After four dates, she’ll wrap up the run at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on Friday, 29 November.

The Jezabels went on hiatus in December 2017 and reunited in June 2022 for a string of shows celebrating their 2011 classic album, Prisoner.
