Don’t worry Tony Hawk Pro Skater fans, Activision has heard your cries. The company’s Chief Operating Officer confirms there is demand for more entries, and consider it a core franchise.
Activision COO says the company has “heard the demand” for a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
In a recent interview with Digital Trends, Activision COO Josh Taub says the publisher has “heard the demand” for new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. Despite its last entry releasing in 2020, the company considers it a “core franchise” still after 25 years.
““The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise is celebrating 25 years this month, and it remains an important core franchise for Activision today,” says Taub. “The success of the franchise is a testament to its legacy and the community of players.”
Despite its importance to Activision, the series has lain dormant the past four years. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is its most recent release, and did well critically. A remake that packed the third and fourth entry together was in the works, but was scrapped when developer Vicarious Visions merged with Blizzard Entertainment.
“The truth of it is that they were trying to find someone to do 3 + 4, but they just didn’t really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious, so they took other pitches from other studios, like, ‘What would you do with a THPS title?,’” says Tony Hawk in an interview with Twisted Pixel Level Designer Andy Gentile. And they didn’t like anything they heard and then that was it.”
Excitement for a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game diminished a bit since then until the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) page refreshed its profile picture, and banner. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, it seems Activision is possibly readying an announcement for the series. Fans have been speculating what the potential announcement might be.
Within the same month, Hawk was interviewed on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meal. Host Josh Scherer asked about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s future. Hawk confirms that he’s working with Activision on “something,” but doesn’t specify.
“I wish I could tell you more, but I can tell you that I have been talking to Activision again which is insanely exciting,” says Hawk. “We’re working on something… But I think it will be something the fans will truly appreciate.”
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s 25th anniversary is on September 29, 2024. Purely speculation, but next week would be a pretty solid time to announce something.
