Watch: Guster Delivers Dynamic Performances from ‘Ooh La La’ on ‘CBS Saturday Morning,’ Plus Exclusive Interview

RMAG news

Over the weekend, Guster performed three songs from Ooh La La, their first new record in five years, on CBS Saturday Morning. To kick off their intimate yet lively performance, the band began with the uplifting track “Keep Going” before continuing on to the equally vibrant and highly allusive song “Witness Tree.” The group concluded with a rendition of “Black Balloon,” a slower, duo-focused track complete with melodic harmonies from guitarist and vocalists Ryan Miller and Adam Gardner. In addition to their dynamic performance, the alternative-rock outfit spoke to CBS correspondent Jeff Glor for an interview about their 30-year career.

The interview captures Guster career-long investment in innovation–the group has continued to diversify the sonic and theatrical qualities of their work with the We Also Have Eras Tour, the product of percussionist Brian Rosenworcel’s love of Taylor Swift and Miller’s desire for a ‘Guster Cabaret’ to “tell the story of their life through song,” complete with skits and costumes, as Miller explains during the televised interview. “We still really care a lot about our band and what we’re doing musically and how to keep fans engaged in what we have going,” Gardner stated. Though they didn’t want Ooh La La to be a “pandemic record,” the May 17 release nevertheless showcases persistent optimism in the face of a changing world. “The lyrics have always dealt with the existential,” Miller added.

Guster’s appearance on CBS Saturday Morning precedes an exciting summer for the band, who will continue their We Also Have Eras Tour on June 29 at Shelburne, Vt.’s The Green at Shelburne Museum. Building on this momentum, Guster is set for a performance the following day, June 30, at The Capitol Groove Festival in Hartford, Conn. A few weeks after this jam-packed weekend, Guster will enliven The Ford in Los Angeles on July 20 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, followed by another unforgettable performance at Newport, R.I.’s legendary Newport Folk Festival on July 26. Later this summer, the ensemble will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Lost and Gone Forever, their third album, at Morrison, Colo.’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Aug. 1 alongside the Colorado Symphony and special guest Kevin Morby, as well as a full LP performance at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium on Sept. 27.
