Zach Lowe, a popular journalist, sports writer, and NBA analyst, has been laid off by ESPN. Lowe had been working for ESPN since 2015, but even before that, he was employed at Grantland, an ESPN-owned sports and pop-culture blog that has since been shut down. Lowe has a considerable number of admirers among the sports fans, and they are wondering what happened.

Why did ESPN lay off Zach Iowe?
On Thursday, September 26, ESPN had laid off Zach Lowe. Lowe’s seven-figure annual salary was reportedly the reason behind ESPN’s decision. (via The Athletic) This comes after the network fired Sunday NFL Countdown host Samamatha Ponder and analyst Robert Griffin III in August 2024. These decisions are reportedly part of ESPN’s fiscal year planning, which is set to conclude at the end of September.
Originally from Connecticut, Lowe attended Greenwich High School before enrolling at Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1999. He worked as a teacher at Cresskill High School in New Jersey before joining the College of William & Mary for a Master’s in U.S. history. He also earned an M.S. degree in journalism from Columbia School of Journalism.
At the start of his professional career, Lowe worked as a crime, government, and courts reporter for the Connecticut-based outlet Stamford Advocate. He later joined The American Lawyer, a monthly legal magazine owned and operated by ALM Media. He was also a part-time contributor to CelticsHub.Com.
Lowe worked at Sports Illustrated before becoming part of the Grantland staff as an NBA analyst in 2012. Three years later, when Grantland shut down, ESPN acquired his contract. He had been with the network since then despite an “aggressive” pursuit by Bleacher Report in 2016. At present, he hosts a podcast called The Lowe Post.
The Athletic reports both Lowe and ESPN have declined to comment on the firing.
