Many fans are shocked at the A Minecraft Movie trailer released on YouTube on Wednesday, September 4. Revealed by Warner Bros., the one-minute debut teaser for the live-action adaptation, directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre), has catapulted to the top of YouTube but has received a very mixed reaction thus far. At the time of writing, it has received over 161,000 likes but more than 129,000 dislikes (as revealed by the Return YouTube Dislike widget). Here’s why fans have dislike-bombed the trailer for A Minecraft Movie featuring Jack Black, Emma Myers, and Jason Momoa.
Why are fans angry about the Minecraft live-action movie trailer?
Fans are mostly angry at the A Minecraft Movie trailer for mixing live-action characters with CGI, with many pleading that the film be scrapped in favor of a fully animated production instead.
Some of the most-liked comments for the movie teaser on YouTube concern the jarring nature between real-life objects and computer-generated graphics. One comment with over 20K likes says “Mincraft vs Minecraft realistic texture pack” and another with over 19K likes that simply says that “This honestly should’ve been [an] animated movie.”
Other comments have asked Warner Bros. to “please send this back to the crafting table” and humorously wondered whether the movie was made using ChatGPT. Ouch.
In fact, more than several YouTube users apologized to Minecraft: Story Mode, a six-episode video game by Telltale Games released in late 2015 that was fully animated. Despite each episode receiving a lukewarm response on Metacritic at the time, some fans are so disappointed by this teaser trailer that they think they have treated the video game series too harshly.
Coincidentally, a trailer for an unofficial animated remake of Minecraft: Story Mode was posted on August 30, 2024. So far, the teaser for this adaptation called “Block by Block” has received over half a million views and over 60,000 likes to date.
A Minecraft Movie is slated to release on April 2, 2025 internationally and April 4, 2025 in North America.
