100-old Italian Navy ship will visit Port of LA in July

The Italian Navy’s Amerigo Vespucci tall ship will pull into the Port of Los Angeles this summer for a festival that will run from July 2 to 8 in the port’s Outer Harbor, POLA spokesperson Phillip Sanfield said this week.

At nearly a century old, the “Vespucci” is the oldest naval vessel of the Italian Navy. The ship, known for its beauty, will visit Los Angeles as part of the its 20-month world tour — which began in July 2023 — spanning more than 40,000 nautical miles, and making calls at 31 ports touching 28 countries and five continents.

The ship serves as a training vessel for officer cadets, and as a way to sharing Italian culture with the world.

While details are still being finalized, Sanfield said, the Vespucci will dock at Los Angeles Port Berth 46 on July 2 in the Outer Harbor, where it will be the center of various activities, including military ceremonies, on-board ship events, conventions, news conferences, meetings, artistic performances, itinerant military displays, art exhibits, cooking demonstrations and more.

Daytime pyrotechnic effects with colored smoke and nighttime scenic lighting will be also displayed on the ship and in the port.

Full details of the visit are still being worked out and planned by the Port of Los Angeles. Check the port’s website closer to the event for details.
