At the beginning of May 2024, 49.5 million people were registered on French electoral lists to vote in the European elections on June 9, 2.2 million more than in the 2019 European elections.
Of these, 1.6 million reside outside France and are registered at a consulate, 269,000 are citizens of another European Union member country residing in France, and 222,000 are on the specific lists for New Caledonia.
Demographic trends
In metropolitan France and its overseas departments, 95% of French people of voting age are registered to vote, the same proportion as in 2022. The number of people registered to vote has risen by 536,500 since the 2022 presidential election. This increase is linked to demographic changes: automatic registrations of young people who have reached the age of 18 have outnumbered deaths. Over this period, 2.6 million French people have voluntarily registered or re-registered on an electoral roll, most often as a result of moving house. More than half of them registered online.
Portuguese in the lead
As was the case five years ago, the Portuguese are the most numerous Europeans registered to vote in France.
