“It’s pretty disappointing that someone would put them in a trash bag,” said Mattie Allen, Director of Communications at Española Humane.

Treasure and Oro, both eight weeks old, are the two lone survivors after someone left eight puppies in a trash bag on the side of a road near North Prince Drive about three miles north of Española. “Unfortunately, the rest of the litter was already deceased,” said Allen.

The shepherd and rottweiler mix puppies got to Española Humane after the shelter saw an online post asking for help caring for the dogs. “They were completely covered in ticks from nose to tail. Inside their ears, in between their toes, everything was covered in ticks,” said Allen.

The shelter says they don’t know how long the pups were in the bag but the dogs were found dehydrated and lethargic. “These little babies are eight weeks old but they are still very dependent upon us for care and love and food and water,” said Allen.

After a few days in the shelter’s care, the dogs are said to be getting better and should be ready for adoption soon. “I would hope that people know we are here to help you, know this is our job,” said Allen.

Española Humane says they hope anyone having trouble caring for animals in the future reaches out for help instead of doing what someone did to these dogs. “We’re always here to take these unwanted vulnerable creatures,” said Allen. For
