“It’s pretty exciting. I didn’t really know that I was going to get to this, so it’s kind of, I was surprised, but I’m really excited,” Juliette Anderson, 13, said in an interview at the competition in National Harbor, Maryland, on Tuesday.

Anderson competed in the three preliminary rounds on Tuesday and was tasked with spelling “caveola” and “dasyure.” She also had to define the word “scythe.” Anderson will participate in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

When Anderson was asked about how she prepared for the competition, she said, “I’ve worked a lot with my mom. There’s an app called the WordClub app that I’ve done a lot. And we’ve made flashcards.”

Earlier this year, Anderson won the New Mexico State Spelling Bee and secured her spot in the national competition. To learn more about the spelling bee, click here.
