ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Animal Humane New Mexico has helped rescue animals from another natural disaster in the state. The shelter on Friday rescued 27 cats and kittens from Las Vegas after flooding caused a water crisis in the city. Also last week, Animal Humane rescued 59 homeless cats and dogs in Ruidoso, where the South Fork and Salt wildfires are burning.

“We normally don’t see these type of situations where we’re getting, you know, back-to-back weeks of calls for help with bringing in this many pets all at once,” said Val Wilson, executive director of Animal Humane New Mexico.
To help conserve water for the pets and people of Las Vegas, the shelter transferred all cats and kittens at the Las Vegas Animal Care Center to Animal Humane’s Main Campus shelter in Albuquerque. “We definitely are reaching our capacity when it comes to our cat population. And we know, you know, dog-wise, because we brought so many from Ruidoso last week, that’s why we were unable to help with the Las Vegas dogs this week,” Wilson explained.
Animal Humane New Mexico is asking community members to help by considering adopting, fostering, or donating money to the nonprofit shelter. “We also have an adoption special right now for our fire evacuation efforts. All adoptions are donation-based fees, so anything that anyone can afford to provide as a donation, they can adopt any of our pets that are available,” said Wilson.
