Automatic recounts happening for 4 primary election races in New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Election officials have reviewed the results of the 2024 primary election and are ordering automatic recounts in four of the races. The recount process happens automatically if races are within a close margin, according to state law.

Automatic recounts will happen for:

State Representative District 43 (In the race for Libertarian representation, Chris Luchini appears to have beaten Phillip Michael Mach before the recount)

Valencia County Treasurer (In the race for Republican representation, Ronald D. Saiz appears to be ahead of Danielle Marie Trujillo before the recount)

Guadalupe County Commissioner District 3 (In the race for Democratic representation, Albert E. Campos, Jr. appears only a few votes ahead of Earnest Chavez before the recount)

San Juan County Commissioner District 3 (In the race for Republican representation, Sandra L. Lanier appears just slightly ahead of Scott A. Eckstein before the recount)

The State Canvass Board has certified the rest of the primary election results in New Mexico. That means that an independent contractor has reviewed the election accuracy and the State Canvass Board has approved of that audit, officially certifying the results of the election.

“The State Canvass Board meeting is the last step in the post-election canvass process that ensures accuracy in the election results,” New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver said in a press release. “New Mexicans can have confidence in these official election results because of the rigorous review process that takes place at the county and state-level. I’m proud to have certified these results alongside Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales and Chief Justice David Thomson.”

“During this election cycle, my office introduced several new tools that significantly enhanced the experience for candidates and voters. I’m pleased to report that these innovations contributed to a smoother and more secure election process. Although New Mexico already holds the top spot in the nation for election administration, we recently implemented electronic nominating petition signatures for candidates, upgraded our absentee ballot tracking system, and launched a secure remote balloting portal for military and overseas voters. I encourage all voters to utilize these and our other resources as they prepare for the upcoming General Election in November,” Toulouse Oliver said.
