Jockey Kyle Frey and trainer Jorge Periban led the standings at Los Alamitos as the Orange County track completed a short thoroughbred season Sunday.
Frey rode two winners on closing day to finish with nine victories, four more than Armando Ayuso, Diego Herrera and Edwin Maldonado. Frey’s big win of the meet was Wynstock’s mild upset in the Los Alamitos Derby.
Periban won one race Sunday to break a four-way tie for leading trainer going into the afternoon, finishing with five victories to four for Bob Baffert, Steve Knapp, Peter Miller, Sergio Morfin and George Papaprodromou. Periban won the opening-day Bertrando Stakes with None Above the Law.
