Rivera’s time as head coach of the Washington Commanders has come to an end. The managing partner, Josh Harris, decided the team needed a new direction to improve its performance. In a statement on X, Harris cited the poor results from the current season as the key reason for the change. Harris acknowledged that the team needed a shift in both leadership and strategy. Now, The focus is on finding a new head coach and head of football operations to lead the franchise forward.
Harris has assembled an advisory team consisting of co-owners Mitchell Rales, Magic Johnson, and David Blitzer, as well as former sports executives Bob Myers and Rick Spielman, to help guide the search for fresh leadership. Harris stressed that making the right choices to build a winning team is the top priority.
Rivera joined the Commanders in 2020 after nine years with the Carolina Panthers. During his time in Washington, Rivera made disappointing personnel decisions on the field and failed to develop a long-term quarterback solution. The team consistently underperformed, never achieving a winning record and only making one playoff appearance.
The final blow was the 2023 season, which ended with a dismal 4-13 record. Rivera’s attempts to stabilize the team by bringing in veteran quarterbacks like Carson Wentz and Ryan Fitzpatrick failed to yield results. His decision to rely on young quarterback Sam Howell this year also fell short, contributing to the team’s struggles.
In a statement on X, Rivera expressed gratitude to the fans, players, and new ownership. He acknowledged the work done to reshape the organization’s culture. However, his efforts were not enough to secure his future with the Commanders.
